I’ve always been easily distracted by small, shiny objects, so I suppose it’s no surprise that I eventually started making jewelry. I first got started by taking a local class, which quickly turned into three classes. From there I decided to make bracelets for the women and girls in my family for Christmas, and it started to snowball from there. It quickly became clear that if I wanted to keep buying new materials to play and experiment, I’d better start trying to sell my work!
I love the creative moment of designing a piece, the zen-like moment of assembling it (punctuated with the occasional curse), and the total satisfaction of the finished result. Especially when I’m experimenting with a new technique and finally nail it.
I also enjoy playing with color, shape, light, and texture. It’s fun to watch people’s reactions at an unexpected combination that works incredibly well. While I don’t mind making duplicates and variations on a theme I often feel driven to try something new, so every time I buy new materials I find myself with things I’ve never used before. Since I’m not an old-timer at this craft, there’s plenty of techniques ahead of me as I search for what will become my style(s), and it’s a lot of fun experimenting even though sometimes the results are less than appealing. At other times, they can be stunning!
